Finally, a PIC USB Bootloader You Can Send To Your Customers!

USB Bootloader Pro lets you distribute firmware updates to users of your PIC microcontroller based product.  Now you can easily combine your firmware with a USB-enabled updating utility.  Your users will be able to connect with a USB cable to a PC, download your latest firmware, and update their product painlessly.  You can even brand the PC software utility so that it looks like you created it.

USB Bootloader Pro gives you:

  • A professional, ready-made PC program with matching bootloader firmware
  • Simple to make it look like you wrote it, with NO PC PROGRAMMING AT ALL
  • End User Mode: Easy to use by your non-technical customers
  • Developer Mode: Full featured programmer capabilities for your own use
  • Uses USB HID class: no device drivers for your customers to install
  • NO .NET FRAMEWORK FOR YOUR CUSTOMERS TO INSTALL
  • Just send your customers a self-extracting zip file and simple instructions
  • Pays for itself in one user upgrade!

You've probably considered (and wished for) a way to make your PIC product USB-capable so you could email updates to your users.  A great idea, except that the USB part of this equation is hard to figure out!  If you've ever wished for an easy solution, then you've just found it.

Think about the advantages.

You'll no longer have to agonize over the decision to release firmware.  You know that the major bug will only surface after you release.  It's well documented in a special section of Murphy's Law.  With USB Bootloader Pro, that concern is drastically reduced.  The consequences of a bad release are now reduced to a simple email notification: if something goes wrong, you send your clients an email, they plug in the USB cable and get the problem fixed.  They'll be impressed that you're a responsible, thorough professional, who has covered all the bases!

Your product gets added value and alleviates the buyer's fear.  From the user's point of view, what could be better than the guarantee of easy fixes and updates?  As potential buyers, they're worried about the future.  If you can assure them that you've got it covered, you've erased a major obstacle to the sale.

The main application firmware in your device does not necessarily have to be a USB application.  But it could be a USB application if you need it to be. It doesn't matter either way. All that matters is that you build your device on one of the USB PIC devices that we support, and that you follow good USB design practices, so the USB part of your device will work with USB Bootloader Pro.

Here's what one USB Bootloader Pro user has to say:
"Our customers find us from all over the world. Many of our designs involve custom firmware and production runs of only 1-5 pieces. In the past, when a user would request additional features after taking delivery, our only option was to ship the gear back to the shop for reprogramming.
Since most of our customers work in 'need it today' environments, we've spent a collective fortune shipping equipment back and forth overnight. Just this week, we've pushed additional features out to one customer in Australia and a second group on the far side of the country.
Our customers love this new solution, and sales have increased specifically because we now offer field updates as an option. The money we've saved on overnight freight has more than paid Trace Systems' fee.
The Trace Systems USB Bootloader allows us to provide firmware updates in the field. It's a simple, elegant and stable solution. I can't imagine developing any future product without it."

Professional Looking USB PIC Bootloader Looks Like YOU Wrote It

You've worked hard to develop a product that your company can be proud of.

When you deliver that product to your customer, you want him or her to have a great experience, every step of the way.  When it comes time to upgrade your product, you want them to see a professional looking PC program that has YOUR company's name on it.

USB Bootloader Pro is easy to customize, with NO PC PROGRAMMING AT ALL, to make it look like your company wrote it. The customization shows YOUR company logo, and YOUR COMPANY NAME AND MESSAGE on the title bar of the program.

USB Bootloader Pro: Easy Enough for Non-Technical Users

If you need to have your non-technical end users perform field upgrades of your product's PIC firmware, you need a solution that is:

  • Simple for them to set up and use
  • Doesn't present them with confusing jargon or complicated options
  • Automates the process, to keep them out of trouble

USB Bootloader Pro has two modes: Developer Mode, for your use at the company, and End User Mode, to make it simple and foolproof for your non-technical customers to upgrade your product in the field.

End User Mode is simple for you to set up by editing an INI file in a text editor.  When your end user runs the PC program you send him, he is presented with a very simple, automated user interface.

Easy enough for end users, powerful enough for developers

USB Bootloader Pro Has Powerful Features for Developers

But just because your end user sees a limited user interface, doesn't mean the USB Bootloader Pro isn't capable of much more.  When YOU use USB Bootloader Pro, you set it in Developer Mode, to use it's full featured programming features.

In Developer Mode, you can:

  • Load, verify, and program the hex file of your choice
  • Read and print out program memory
  • Read program memory and store as a hex file
  • Program and read individual types of memory: program memory, User IDs, Configuration Words, and on-chip EEPROM (for those PICs that support it)
  • Perform any of the programming steps (blank check, erase, program, verify, and processor restart) individually or in automatic sequence
  • At the factory, you can even use USB Bootloader Pro to make a single hex file that contains both the bootloader firmware and your main app's firmware, so you can program both parts into each device in a single, quick, low-cost programming operation.

Don't worry: your end user cannot enter Developer Mode, only you can. When YOU use USB Bootloader Pro, you set it in Developer Mode, to use it's full featured programming capabilities.

USB Bootloader Pro Pays For Itself In One Customer Upgrade

It's so much cheaper to email them an upgrade!

Just think of how much it costs to overnight ship even one package to and from your customer.

Now add in the cost of someone's time at your company: to unpack the product they just returned to you, set it up to program, check it out after upgrading the firmware, then packaging the product for return to the customer.

With USB Bootloader Pro, you get full royalty-free rights to distribute your product with USB Bootloader Pro firmware included in the device.  Then, when it's time to upgrade the product, just email your users an archive with simple-to-use USB Bootloader Pro PC software and a few other files. After a few clicks with the mouse, they have upgraded the device themselves.

When you compare the costs, we think you'll agree that USB Bootloader Pro will pay for itself on the very first customer upgrade.

And the cost of upgrading the rest of your customers?  That will be FREE!
